5 Ways to Find Time to Shop at the Farmers Market

When you’re busy with family and work, it can be hard to find time to add another shopping trip into your week. But shopping at the farmers market offers great benefits that make it worth the extra effort.

If you live far away from the farmers market and don't have transportation:

  • Even if you don't live near any farms, you might be surprised! Often, cities have farmers markets that move from neighborhood to neighborhood, and there might be one close to you. Do an internet search to see if there is one in your area.
  • Consider carpooling with a friend, family member, or fellow WIC client. Lots of people go to farmers markets and farms, so chances are good you can find someone who'd be happy to give you a ride if you need one.

If you don't know when to fit in visiting a farmers market around your regular supermarket trips:

  • Treat your trips to the farmers market as a fun family activity! Kids love all the colors, smells, and sounds at a market, and they can also learn more about farmers and the kinds of foods that grow in your area. Farmers markets also often have fun activities like petting zoos and corn mazes.
  • Remember, you don't have to go to the farmers market all of the time. You can wait until your favorite fruits and veggies are in season. If you want to stock up, buy extra and make a plan for freezing and canning.
  • Keep in mind that you can use WIC Project FRESH coupons in addition to your regular WIC benefits. After you complete this lesson, you may be eligible to receive $25 in coupons to use at an authorized farmers market.
