Clean hands for healthy bodies: Handwashing tips for adults and children

When should I wash my hands?

You should wash your hands often. To prevent foodborne illness, take care to especially wash your hands:

  • Before, during, and after preparing food
  • After handling raw meat, poultry, seafood, fish, or their juices, or uncooked eggs
  • Before eating

How should I wash my hands?

First, wet your hands under clean, running water. Turn off the water, then apply soap.

Then, rub your hands together with the soap until bubbles appear. Scrub for at least 20 seconds. Don’t forget to scrub:

  • the backs of your hands
  • between your fingers
  • under your nails

Next, rinse your hands well under clean, running water.

Finally, dry your hands. Use a clean towel or air dry them.

How should children wash their hands?

Children should wash their hands following the same guidelines as above. Watch this kid-friendly video with your child to help them remember! The video contains a song. Have your child wash their hands while they sing the song two times through.
