C hildren often see produce in a supermarket, not on a tree or growing in the ground. Use fruits and vegetables to connect your child to nature! If you have a garden or a sunny spot inside for potted plants, you may be able to grow some fruits and veggies. Home-grown tastes better because it is fresher! You pick it when it is best! Your library is a great place to begin learning how fruits and veggies grow. Plan a trip to the library and ask your librarian for age-appropriate books! Reading books to your child is also a great way to learn together and bond.

How Kids Can Help in the Garden

  • Gardening can benefit your child’s health and create a love of being outside in nature.
  • Children learn by doing and feel proud of their work in the garden.
  • They can help you mulch, pull weeds, and plant too.

Community Impact

Community Gardens:
Some neighborhoods and communities share a garden. You may have one near you. This website will help you find the community garden nearest you. (The website will open in a new tab, so don't forget to come back to finish the lesson!) Get to know your neighbors while growing fruits and vegetables.
