Here are a few ways to make menu planning fun for kids:

1. Let them choose
As you create your menu, let the kids choose one part of each meal. Side dishes are a great place to start. To learn how to ask your kids meal planning questions in a way that makes sure you get answers, use our Good Questions for Kids resource.

2. Identify family favorites
Create a list of each family member’s favorite foods and recipes. Then, use the lists to help guide your menu. Not sure how to get started? Check out an example here: Family Favorites

3. Use themes!
Theme nights can be fun for kids, and they are also a great way to menu plan with your child. Looking for theme ideas? Fun with Themes will provide some time-proven favorite ideas!

4. Shop your foods on hand
Let your children shop the pantry for one meal a week! Be brave and embrace their unique pairings. Guide their choices, but don’t make decisions for them. Coach them through the process with simple tasks such as; “Please pick out a green vegetable from the refrigerator” or “Go find the grain you want for supper tonight” or “Which meat should we take out of the freezer for dinner tomorrow?”

5. Be adventurous!
Explore a new food once a month: buy small amounts to test. Then if it is a hit, buy a larger amount in the future. Local veggies and fruits are less expensive when they are in season. Frozen options are fabulous too. That way you can take out small servings for tasting and keep the rest frozen. Visit our Nutritious Foods list resource for new ideas to try.
