Offering solid foods; Timing is right

FACT: Growth spurts can change how your baby sleeps.

A clock at night. Time shows 2:40 AM.

They may wake up more often to eat in order to keep up with their growth. This is normal!

Many parents often feel like they need to start solid foods if their baby is waking up more during the night or gets very hungry for a few days. Be patient. This is just a phase. This change in sleep and appetite usually lasts only a few days. From birth to around 6 months old, babies get all the nutrition they need from breastmilk or infant formula. Breastmilk and infant formula are the best foods you can offer your baby until they are around 6 months old.

FACT: Offering solid foods too soon can be harmful.

Baby breastfeeding

Breastmilk and infant formula provide important nutrients that help your baby grow.

Beginning solid foods too early in place of breastmilk or infant formula can prevent your baby from getting the nutrients they need.

Introducing solid foods before a baby has fully developed the skills to swallow them can cause choking.
