How Much Food Is Enough? Recommended amounts for kids

The amount of food a child eats may vary from day to day. This is normal. However, many parents worry their child is not eating enough. Kids may need more or less food depending on growth spurts, activity, and general health. As you encourage your child's healthy eating habits keep in mind:

  • Your role as a parent is to offer your child a variety of nutritious foods at meals and snacks. Your child decides how much to eat from the choices you offer.
  • Trust that your child will eat when they are hungry.
  • Allow your child to stop eating when they are full.
  • Keep the amounts shown in the table below in mind. It is okay if your child needs a little more or less. Each child may need different amounts.
  • Offer a variety of healthy snacks to make sure your child gets all the nutrients they need.
  • Avoid offering snacks 1 to 2 hours before a meal.
