Action Plan: Make healthy choices by reading food labels

 

Practice reading nutrition labels using the following steps. It’s best if you look at food labels you have in your home, but we have included one as an example.

Questions About Serving Size  How much is a serving size? Food A Food B  How does this compare to the amount you or your child usually eats?  How many servings are in the entire container?
Questions About Fats  How many TOTAL fats are in a serving?  Is the Saturated Fat above 20% of the % Daily Value for a serving?  Is there Trans Fat?
Questions About Calories, Sodium, and, Sugar  How many Calories are in each serving?  Is the Sodium above 20% DV for a serving?  Are the Added Sugars above 20% for a serving?
Questions About Other nutrients  Are any of these nutrients above 20% DV for a serving?  Fiber Vitamin D Calcium Iron  Potassium
