Shopping with ease. Try these proven tips.

Go early. Farmers markets and roadside stands are usually less crowded first thing in the morning. This makes it easier to shop with kids, especially when pushing a large stroller. It is also when there is the best selection of produce.

Or, go late. Y
ou can often get better deals right before the market or roadside stand closes. Farmers would rather sell their goods for less than pack everything up at the end of the day.

Ask questions.

Not sure if a melon is ripe or what that funny-looking fruit is? Ask the farmer! Farmers enjoy talking with their customers and sharing what they know. They sincerely want you to enjoy the produce you get at their stand. Weather and growing conditions can affect the flavor and quality of certain fruits and vegetables. It's always a good idea to ask the farmer what they recommend trying.

Try new stuff.

Produce at a farmers market or roadside stand might look very different from what you're used to at the supermarket. At the farmers market, you will find a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. Good news: that lopsided tomato or purple cauliflower is likely to be way more delicious and may be more nutritious than produce you can get at the grocery store. It will certainly be fresher!

Keep an open mind.

Growing seasons for each fruit and vegetable start slowly. If you go once and can't find what you're looking for, try again next month.

Experiment and try new foods.

Eat whole plants from root to shoot.

Many plants have multiple edible parts. Root crops like beets, turnips, and even yams, have roots and leaves that can be eaten. Ask farmers to learn more.

Buy in bulk.

Farmers are often willing to give customers a deal when they buy large amounts.
