  • Start with mild-flavored fish. Some fish has a milder flavor than others. Start by offering tilapia or sole. These milder options tend to go over better with children.
  • Don't let it dry out. Whitefish like flounder and sole are easy to overcook. Poaching is an easy way to keep fish moist.

  • Watch for bones. Nothing turns a kid against fish faster than an unexpected “crunch!” And bones can be a choking hazard, too.
    > Shellfish, like shrimp, are naturally bone-free. Save money and buy it frozen. Save time and purchase options labeled "peeled and deveined."
    > Cod, salmon, tilapia, and flounder fillets might have some bones. Their bones are pretty easy to find and pick out.
    > Take a little extra time to cut up or flake fish after it’s cooked. Check carefully for bones before you serve.

  • Just add dips! Some kids won’t go near seafood without something to dunk it in! Cut fish into bite-sized chunks. Offer them with ketchup, low-fat ranch, tartar sauce, or any other sauces your kids love.
  • Use canned tuna or salmon for quick and easy no-recipe meal ideas:
    > Add to a cheese quesadilla.
    > Mix with light mayonnaise and pickle relish. Then spread on whole grain bread or tortilla.
    > Combine with salad greens.
    > Top off your favorite baked pasta or noodle dish.
